Every month in 2024, we are highlighting the work of Give Lively member nonprofits in one category of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015.

The United Nations website states that “the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)... are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”

We find inspiration and insight from these selected nonprofits and hope you do too. Is your nonprofit engaged in similar work? Use the feedback tool at the bottom of this article to tell us about it.

SDG Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere

Global Citizen

This nonprofit is an action platform dedicated to achieving the end of extreme poverty, powered by a community of millions of Global Citizens who believe in one world, one people – where everyone has an equal chance to thrive. Global Citizens collectively have contributed to more than a decade of actions that, coupled with Global Citizens’ high-profile advocacy work, have helped to deliver financial commitments to organizations at the forefront of defeating poverty throughout the world. As of the writing of this article, the actions of Global Citizens have impacted the lives of more than 1.29 billion people through individual interventions, from education to health, that help protect people from extreme poverty and its impacts.

Global Citizen uses a Give Lively-powered Simple Donation Widget on its website for donations. At the 2023 Global Citizen Festival in NYC, Give Lively shared a special video announcement about an upcoming partnership set to bring even lower third-party payment processing fees to nonprofits.

Asian Americans for Equality, Inc.

Through community development, this organization advances racial, social and economic justice for Asian Americans and other systematically disadvantaged communities, guided by the lived experience of Asian Americans and their commitment to civil rights.

In 2023, Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) launched a monthly food pantry, offering culturally appropriate food East Harlem, New York City, using a Give Lively-powered Campaign Page. The Asian population has grown tremendously in East Harlem in recent years, but the neighborhood is a food desert for Asian produce and other grocery items – and most community members travel long distances to do their shopping.

Human Development Foundation

The mission of this organization is to facilitate a non-political movement for positive social change and community empowerment through mass literacy, enhanced quality of education, universal primary healthcare and grassroots economic development. Since its founding, the goal of Human Development Foundation (HDF) has been to give people in rural Pakistan the tools to move out of poverty and to lead a life of dignity. HDF envisions a Pakistan where every child attends school; health care is for all; clean drinking water is not a luxury; and communities are vibrant and self-sustaining.

The Give Lively-powered Campaign Page for the “Nazar 2020: clear vision for a better future" is an excellent example of using embedded video in conjunction with impact stories to connect donors to the people and causes their contributions support.

Maloto Inc

This organization seeks to transform the lives of vulnerable populations in Malawi living in extreme poverty and provide women and children with the opportunity to reach their full potential in an actively sustainable way. Maloto supports health and nutrition programs, including one that provides hot, nutritious meals to over 200 children three times a week; community outreach activities to help HIV+ children and their families access critical health services and nutrition information; and a food distribution program for the community’s most vulnerable households. Additionally, Maloto supports educational activities for over 400 students and funds the Kwithu Kitchen – the Northern Region’s first women-owned food processing cooperative.

Maloto successfully activated their community for the “Maloto Means to Dream 2022” Campaign Page by allowing supporters to create their own Peer-to-Peer Fundraising pages. Read the powerful personal appeal of #1-ranked fundraiser Rose Allen on her Peer-to-Peer Fundraising page.

Central American Resource Center (CARECEN)

For over 40 years, this organization has worked to foster the comprehensive development of the Latino population in the Washington DC area. Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) helps immigrant families become more secure, stable and engaged in the community. Immigrants seeking to integrate into the United States often face social, economic and political barriers that make it difficult to transition. CARECEN’s programs increase skills, knowledge and civic engagement – helping foster security, stability and a better sense of belonging while strengthening the community overall.

CARECEN’s “2023 End of Year Campaign!”, powered by a Give Lively Campaign Page, is an outstanding example of motivating donors using an embedded video to tell the story of those whose lives the nonprofit impacts.
